The Eighty Years' War Illustrated eBook George Edmundson
This was a brief but lucid account of the events surrounding Dutch independence in the 16th and 17th centuries. it begins with a whirlwind list of names and events that allowed Philip of Spain to claim sovereignty over the Netherlands, but once that situation is set up, the pace becomes more methodical. The book does a decent job of describing the people and events that shaped the Netherlands into something resembling their present character. It is short on details concerning the nature of influence of the general population on the conduct of their leaders, and it does not discuss at all how people lived in the time. On the other hand, it does discuss the government of the Free States and the ways in which that affected the outcome. In summary, the discussion is often a bit superficial, but there is enough detail and the writing is good enough that one can get a pretty good understanding of the course cause of events.I had read two other books that dealt with this period, but this is the best I have seen among those. I read it on the Kindle edition for a buck - I got much more than my money's worth.

The Eighty Years' War Illustrated eBook George Edmundson Reviews
Regular!!
I was looking for a good (not too detailed, not too brief) overview of this war. I was pleased with Edmundson's book. It gave the right amount of detail and also fleshed out the people adequately.
The last star that I could not give is due to using a format which makes the visuals (maps/charts) near useless- dark and unreadable. I had to use another Netherlands map to stay up with the army movements. In book format, this should not be a problem.
This chronology of the Dutch war of independence is very good om the bewildering internal Dutch internal and external politics. More incisive is how the sensible policies of Charles V could have avoided the revolt. More insight into the Dutch military innovations would have been nice.
valuable for dilettante history readers familiar w basic European history. Gripping story of the struggle of the disparate feudal and mercantile communities which bind ultimately to a nation. Highlights transition from late middle ages thru the eighteenth century using a chronological narrative populated by deftly drawn portraits of key players. the formation of Dutch national identity is clarified. Well balanced treatment of the religious geopolitical, economic, dynastic and military factors .
